This is my first attempt at blogging, and I'm doing it as an example for my students. We are a high school computer literacy class focusing our attention on career issues.
Today we are thinking about how to pick your career. What did I like to do when I was younger? What do I like to do now? What am I good at? We're also discovering that careers are changing, and while we need some kind of training or education beyond high school we may not need a 4-year college degree. Fortunately, we can see what the fastest growing careers are, and take that information into account as we plan our careers. No one wants to spend time and money preparing for a career that has no job openings!
We are looking at what motivates us. Is it money, prestige, or helping others? How can we use that information to help us plan a career?
It is my hope that my students will want to consider carefully as they reply to today's questions. Reflection is an important skill and necessary to getting to know oneself well enough to choose a career that is just right.
What lucky people we are, to have the luxury of selecting a career we'll like, rather than having to beg for any kind of job at all so that we aren't hungry! I hope we never forget that. I also hope my students will choose a career that leaves them feeling fulfilled, that allows them to make the world a better place, and they are able to earn enough money in the process.
